How Far in Advance Should You Book a Photographer in Charlotte, NC?

One of the most common questions I hear is: "How far in advance should I book my photographer?"

The short answer? As soon as you know you want photos and my books are open!

But the actual answer depends on what type of session you're planning, what season you want, and whether you need a weekend date.

As a Charlotte photographer, I photograph seniors, families, couples, and graduates throughout the year, and certain times of the year tend to book much faster than others.

Here's how far ahead I recommend planning your session.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Senior Photos?

For senior photos, I recommend booking a few months in advance, especially if you have a specific season, location, or weekend in mind.

Fall and spring are some of the busiest times of year for senior photography in Charlotte. The weather is beautiful, the leaves are changing (to be colorful or green), and many seniors want good weather portraits.

If you're hoping for a popular weekend date, waiting until the last minute can make your options much more limited.

It's also helpful to book early if you want plenty of time to plan outfits, locations, props, hair and makeup, and any personal details you'd like to incorporate.

I've written more about this in How to Make Your Charlotte Senior Photos Feel Unique to You, where I talk about incorporating your interests, style, meaningful locations, and personal details into your session.

UNC Charlotte Seniors Should Plan Ahead

If you're a senior or graduate at UNC Charlotte, I especially recommend planning ahead around graduation season! Campus is a popular location for graduation photos, and both spring and fall are busy times for college senior photography.

If you want cap and gown photos around iconic locations like the Union Overlook, the front sign, or other favorite campus spots, booking early gives you a much better chance of getting the date and timing you want (as well as fewer lines at popular spots on campus!!)

How Far in Advance Should You Book Family Photos?

For family photos, I generally recommend booking at least 1–3 months ahead, and earlier if you're hoping for a weekend date during a busy season. Fall family photography is especially popular in Charlotte. Families are looking for changing leaves, cooler weather, and those cozy seasonal photos for holiday cards and gifts. That means October and November weekends can fill quickly. If you already know you want fall family photos, don't wait until the leaves start changing to reach out!

Planning ahead also gives us time to choose the right location, coordinate outfits, and make sure your session fits into your family's schedule.

What About Spring Photos?

Spring can also be a busy season, especially for college seniors, families, and seniors. If you're hoping for flowering trees, greenery, or a specific spring location, it's a good idea to start planning early! I typically open my spring books in early winter.

Charlotte has so many beautiful outdoor locations, but the exact look of each location changes throughout the year.

Booking early gives you more flexibility to choose a date that works with the season you have in mind.

What About Summer?

Summer tends to offer a little more flexibility, depending on the type of session you're looking for. If you're working around a busy summer schedule, though, I still recommend booking ahead. Between vacations, camps, weddings, sports, and everything else that happens during the summer, your calendar can fill up quickly!

One thing to keep in mind: Charlotte is HOT in the summer. I typically recommend morning sessions or indoor (studio or home) during this time of year!

What If I Need Photos Sooner?

Don't panic! Sometimes you don't know you need photos until you suddenly realize you need them.

Maybe your child is graduating, your family is visiting Charlotte, you got engaged, or you simply realized it's been way too long since you've had professional photos taken. If you need a session sooner, reach out anyway!

I may have an opening that works for you, even if you're booking closer to your desired date.

Why Booking Early Makes the Experience Better

Booking early isn't just about securing a spot on the calendar. It gives you time to actually enjoy the planning process. Instead of scrambling to figure out what everyone is going to wear the week before your session, you have time to think through your outfits. Instead of choosing a location because it's the only one available, you have more options.

And instead of feeling like your photoshoot is one more thing you have to rush through, you can actually look forward to it.

That's exactly why I send my clients planning resources after they book. I want you to know what to expect and feel supported throughout the entire process.

So, When Should You Book Your Photographer?

If you have a specific date, season, location, or weekend in mind, the earlier you reach out, the better.

My general recommendation is:

Senior photos: A few months ahead (or, join my waitlist for next season photos to make sure you get a date!)
College graduation photos: 1–3+ months ahead (waitlist applies to both college and high school seniors!)
Family photos: 1–3+ months ahead
Fall family photos: As early as possible
Spring photos: 2–4 months ahead
Summer photos: A few weeks to a few months ahead
Last-minute sessions: Always worth asking! Sometimes I can send an associate in my place if I am already booked!

And if you're flexible with your date or willing to consider a weekday, you may have more options (way more options!!)

At the end of the day, you don't need to have everything figured out before you inquire.

That's part of my job.

If you're looking for a Charlotte photographer for senior photos, family photos, engagement photos, or portraits, I'd love to help you figure out the best timing, location, and plan for your session.
