How to Prepare for Your Senior Photoshoot: A Charlotte Senior Photographer’s Guide

Your senior photos are about so much more than showing up, smiling at the camera, and calling it a day. This is your chance to celebrate everything that makes you you before you head into your next chapter!

As a Charlotte senior photographer, one of my favorite parts of the process is helping my seniors plan a session that feels personal, relaxed, and completely their own. But if you've never had professional portraits taken before, it can be hard to know exactly how to prepare.

What should you wear? How many outfits should you bring? What should you do with your hair and makeup? Should you bring props? And what about choosing a location?

Here is everything you need to know to feel confident and prepared for your senior photoshoot in Charlotte!

Start by Thinking About What You Want Your Photos to Feel Like

Before you worry about outfits or locations, think about the overall feeling you want from your senior photos.

Do you want something classic and timeless? Fun and colorful? Editorial? Natural and outdoorsy? Maybe you want a little bit of everything.

Your senior session doesn't need to look like everyone else's.

One of my favorite things about senior photography is creating photos that actually tell your story. Your favorite activities, your personality, your future plans, and even the little things you love can all become part of your session.

If you're looking for inspiration, I wrote an entire guide about How to Make Your Charlotte Senior Photos Feel Unique to You — from meaningful props and outfits to choosing locations that actually mean something to you.

Choose Locations That Feel Like You

Charlotte has so many options for senior photos, which means you don't have to settle for a generic backdrop.

You might want the greenery of a nature location, the architecture of Uptown Charlotte, the charm of Davidson, your high school campus, or a location that connects to one of your hobbies.

Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time

One of the biggest things you can do to make your session easier is to plan your outfits before the day of your photoshoot.

I typically recommend bringing a combination of looks rather than having every outfit feel exactly the same.

Think about including:

  • A dressier outfit

  • A casual outfit

  • A school or college-inspired outfit

  • An outfit that shows off your personality

  • A backup option, just in case

Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

Your senior photos should look like you, not like you're wearing an outfit because you think you're "supposed" to.

Don't Forget the Details

The little things can make your photos feel so much more personal.

Consider bringing:

  • Your cap and gown

  • Graduation cords or stoles

  • Your class ring

  • A letter jacket

  • Sports equipment

  • Musical instruments

  • Books

  • A favorite hobby item

  • Something related to your future career

  • Your college sweatshirt

  • Your pet

You don't need to bring all of these. Just think about what represents this chapter of your life.

If it matters to you, it belongs in your photos.

Take Care of the Basics Before Your Session

The day before your senior photos, try to keep things simple.

Get a good night's sleep, drink plenty of water, and make sure your outfits are clean, steamed, and ready to go.

If you're getting your hair or makeup professionally done, make sure you allow enough time so you aren't rushing before your session.

And don't try an entirely new hairstyle, haircut, or skincare routine immediately before your photoshoot. Your senior photos should look like you!

Bring Someone Who Makes You Feel Comfortable

You don't have to come to your senior photos alone.

I actually love when seniors bring a parent, sibling, friend, or even their dog. Having someone you love nearby can make the session feel more like a fun experience and less like you're showing up for a formal photoshoot. And yes, I will absolutely get a few photos with your mom, dad, siblings, or whoever came along if you'd like!

You Don't Need to Know How to Pose

This is probably one of the biggest things I want every senior to know:

You do not need to know how to pose.

That's my job!

You don't need to practice poses from Pinterest or worry about what to do with your hands. I'll guide you throughout the session and give you direction while still leaving room for natural movement and genuine moments. My goal is for you to feel comfortable enough that eventually you're not even thinking about the camera.

Most Importantly, Have Fun!

Your senior photos are celebrating a pretty big milestone. You've spent years getting here, and now you're getting ready to start something completely new. Your photos should capture more than what you looked like at 17 or 18. They should capture who you were.

So bring the outfit you love. Bring your favorite things. Bring your best friend. Bring your dog. Bring the champagne (of course if you are of age ;). Bring the college sweatshirt.

If you're looking for a Charlotte senior photographer who will help you plan a personalized senior session from start to finish, I'd love to help you create photos that feel completely you.
