The Best Time of Day for Family Photos in Charlotte, NC
If you're planning family photos in Charlotte, one of the first questions you might have is: "What time should we schedule our session?"
And while I wish there were one perfect answer, the best time for family photos depends on your family, your location, and the type of light you're looking for.
As a Charlotte family photographer, though, there is one time of day I especially love for outdoor family sessions: golden hour (sunset)
Here's why timing matters and how to choose the best time for your Charlotte family photos.
What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the period shortly before sunset when the sun is lower in the sky and the light becomes softer, warmer, and more flattering. Instead of the harsh overhead light you get in the middle of the day, golden hour gives us softer shadows and that beautiful warm glow you often see in outdoor family photography.
Why I Love Golden Hour for Family Photos
Golden hour isn't just pretty. It's incredibly versatile. During a typical family session, I want your gallery to feel like more than a collection of everyone standing in the same spot and smiling. We might walk, play, run, snuggle, let the kids explore, and move through different areas of the location. That movement becomes even more beautiful when we're working with soft evening light.
It's one of the reasons I love locations like Fisher Farm and Jetton Park. Both give us room to move around and create variety instead of staying in one small area.

What About Morning Family Photos?
Morning sessions can also be beautiful! If your family naturally functions better in the morning, especially if you have younger children, an earlier session may actually be the best choice. Some children are happiest and most energetic earlier in the day. If your little one is going to be completely exhausted by 7 p.m., there is no reason to force an evening session just because golden hour is popular.
The most beautiful photos are the ones where your family feels comfortable and happy!
What About Midday?
Midday is usually not my first choice for outdoor family photography, unless it is at a heavily shaded location, like the UNCC Botanical Garden.
The sun is higher in the sky, which can create stronger shadows and brighter highlights. It can also make everyone squint, especially when we're photographing in an open area.
That doesn't mean midday photos can't work. It just means we may want to choose a location with more shade or look for areas where the light is naturally softer.
The Best Time Depends on Your Location
The same session time can look completely different depending on where we're photographing. A wide-open field will have very different light than a location surrounded by trees. A location near water can also reflect and change the way the light feels. That's why choosing your location and choosing your session time often go hand in hand.
When I help my Charlotte families plan their sessions, I'm thinking about more than just which location looks pretty. I'm considering your family, the age of your children, how much variety we can create, and what the light will look like.
What If My Kids Eat Dinner Early?
This is one of the biggest concerns I hear from parents.
If your children normally eat dinner at 5:30 and your session is scheduled around sunset, you might be wondering how on earth everyone is supposed to survive.
My best advice?
Plan ahead.
Give everyone a snack before you leave, bring water, and don't arrive at your session already stressed because everyone is hungry.

Fall Family Photos in Charlotte
Timing becomes especially important during the fall. Fall is one of the most popular seasons for family photos in Charlotte, and for good reason. Between the changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and beautiful evening light, it's hard to beat.
But fall dates can also fill quickly, especially if you're hoping for a weekend session. If you're hoping to schedule fall family photos, I recommend reaching out early rather than waiting until the leaves start changing.
So, What Is the Best Time for Family Photos?
For most outdoor family sessions, the hour before sunset is my favorite. But the best time is ultimately the time when your family can arrive relaxed, happy, and ready to have fun! Because at the end of the day, beautiful light is important, but it's not more important than your family actually enjoying the experience.
