What to Wear to Your Senior Session: Fall Edition
Fall is one of my absolute favorite seasons for senior sessions — the colors, the cozy textures, and the golden light are just unbeatable. But one of the most common questions I get is, “What should I wear?” The right outfit can make all the difference — not just in how your photos look, but in how confident you feel during your session.
As a Charlotte senior photographer, I’ve learned that fall photos are all about balance: layering without overdoing it, choosing colors that complement the season (and your skin tone!), and picking outfits that feel true to your personality. I’ll share plenty of outfit ideas and color tips below, but here’s the most important thing — if there’s something you love and feel amazing in, wear it! Whether that’s a bright color, a bold pattern, or something a little unexpected, your session should reflect you. These photos are meant to celebrate your story, not fit into a box.
1. Layering Is Your Best Friend
Fall weather can be unpredictable — one minute it’s chilly, the next it’s warm and sunny. Layering not only keeps you comfortable but also adds visual interest to your photos! Think cardigans, shackets, or a light jacket you can take on and off for variety. A cozy sweater or textured scarf can also photograph beautifully. Christa had a gorgeous knitted sweater on that was perfect for fall, with a really nice pattern that stood out well on camera!
2. Neutrals + Pops of color
Neutrals always photograph beautifully and pair well with natural backdrops like leaves or fields. Think cream, tan, olive, rust, gem tones, or muted burgundy. As we get closer to winter and the trees lose color, warm tones with more color help keep your photos feeling vibrant!
Yes, neutrals are lovely, but so are fun pops of color if they feel true to your personality. I loooove a bright pop of color in an outfit — it adds life and energy to your photos! You can also mix in subtle pops of color through accessories like a hat, jewelry, or shoes.
Shelby had a fun pop of color for her last outfit of the session! She started with more necklaces, and as a fun third outfit, she wore a chunky orange/ red sweater that was perfect for fall.
3. Flowy or Fitted? Mix It Up!
Flowy dresses or skirts look amazing when there’s movement — they add softness and depth to your photos. But don’t underestimate jeans or structured pants either! They’re perfect for seated poses, walking shots, and more casual moments. A mix of both gives your gallery variety.
Taylor opted for a flowy and fitted outfit for her session! I think choosing both types of outfits allows for variety in your gallery. There are some poses we can’t do with a dress that we can for jeans, and vice versa!
4. Bring One Dressed-Up Outfit + One Casual Outfit
Having two outfit options lets you capture both sides of your personality. Start with something a little more elevated (like a dress or skirt with nice shoes) and end with a casual look (jeans, cozy sweater, sneakers, etc.). You’ll love having both options to choose from in your final gallery.
Doesn’t even have to be a dress! If you like skirts better or a nice pair of pants (not jeans), I think either of those looks great too! Or, if you just like feeling a little dressed up for most of the session, that is okay too! Kinley did just that, her first outfit was a cute fall-inspired skirt and sweater, her second outfit was a white dress, and her third outfit was her cheer uniform!
5. Props Make It Personal
Most fall seniors don’t have their cap and gown yet, so props are a fun way to tell your story! Think banners, school flags, Bibles, athletic gear, instruments, or even your pet. Small details help bring out your personality!
6. Comfort Is Key
You’ll be moving, sitting, and walking around during your session — so make sure your outfits feel comfortable and like you. You don’t want to spend the shoot adjusting straps or worrying about your clothes. Confidence always photographs best.
7. Skip the Logos + Tiny Patterns
Avoid clothing with visible logos (BESIDES college and school shirts!!) — they can distract from your face and date your photos. Same goes for tiny stripes or small checkered patterns (the camera doesn’t love those, trust me!).
8. Personal Style > Trends
Trends come and go, but your personal style will always feel timeless. Wear what feels authentic to you — your photos should reflect who you are right now.
9. Bonus Tips:
Bring a lint roller and a hairbrush — they always come in handy!
Avoid wrinkled clothes (iron and hang them on the way to your session).
Coordinate your outfits with your location (for example, earthy tones look amazing at Lake Norman or Jetton Park during the fall).
Don’t forget comfy shoes for walking between spots — you can always change into nicer ones for photos.
At the end of the day, your senior session should feel like you. These tips are simply a guide to help you look and feel your best — but if you have a favorite outfit that makes you feel confident (even if it’s bright or outside the “fall color palette”), wear it proudly. Confidence always photographs beautifully, and that’s what truly makes your photos timeless.
Fall gives you the perfect chance to play with layers, rich tones, and cozy textures — but don’t be afraid to have fun with it!
